Here are some pictures of our very first hiking trip abroad. It took us over the European alps along the European long-distance walk number E5. The first part was completed in summer 1988, and there was a short followup in summer 1990. We actually stopped the second trip because I was quite sunburned after only one day of hiking. Since then I'll never forget a hat and some sun-blocker when I am "on tour". Both trips are some 240km+75km over the alps. Quite nice landscape, but quite polpular and crowded at the same time, if you do it in the very summer months.

1990-08-01: train to Imst, bus to Mittelberg, walk to Braunschweiger Hütte
1990-08-02: Braunschweiger Hütte - Zwieselstein
1990-08-03: Zwieselstein - St. Leonard (not the same village as above!)
1990-08-04: St. Leonard - Hirzer Hütte
1990-08-05: Hirzer Hütte - Meraner Hütte and down to the railway station

European Long Distance Paths

As there is not that much electronic information, we should stick to old fashion paper. Here are some books to read - not necessarily on this track, but maybe nice to read when doing the track. Anyway, I take this opportunity to list some of my favourite alpine-books:

Helmut Dumler: Wanderwege vom Bodensee nach Oberitalien. Bruckmann, München, Germany, 1984: that's the description of the track which we where using, and which actually inspired us to do this track. Should give you some idea about distances to walk and so on.
Malte Röper: Auf Abwegen. Bergverlag Rother, München, Germany, 1995: Has definitely nothing to do with this trail, but is quite funny to read. Gives you a good (=bad) impression of the climber's scene in northern Germany.
Pit Schubert: Sichertheit und Risiko in Fels und Eis. Bergverlag Rother, München, Germany, 1994: Has someting to do with the area at least. It's a report by the German alpine club DAV (Deutscher Altenverein) about safety "on the rocks". Despite the serious subject, really funny to read. If you are able to read some German - read it!!
Joe Simpson: Touching the Void. Jonathan Cape Ltd, London, UK, 1988 Another off-topic book; now we switch from european alps to higher mountains. A classical book within climbing literature.
