 Hardangervidda, winter 2001/2002

In winter 2001/2002, we (Hermann-Josef Gördes and myself) went a third time to the Hardangervidda/Norway, the second tour being described here (where also some links are provided). This time we wanted to experience Norwegian winter and went there after X-mas 2001 with snowshoes and pulka/rucksack. Indeed, we had a very nice (but sometimes freezing cold) winter hiking tour. We started and finished in Finse and encircled the Hardangerjökull clockwise in 12 days (approx 110km). The tour is somewhat obvious when looking at the Hardangervidda overview map below. We followed the summer tracks aided by GPS and compass/map. The temperatures were quite cold in the beginning (30 to 40 degrees below zero) but went up to almost zero after newyear. Most of the time, we slept in the tent (with two exeptions). As a rough figure, we used 3.5l of shelllite for the stove for two people (10 days in the tent, 2 in a hut), including melting of snow and cooking in the evenings. The maps needed for our trip are the following:
  • Turkart Hardangervidda (Statens Kartverk, Norway), scale 1:200.000 for overview and planning purposes.
  • Norge 1:50.000, M711 series (Statens Kartverk), blad 1416 II (Hardangerjökulen) and III (Myrdal) for the northern part .
  • Norge 1:50.000, M711 series (Statens Kartverk), blad 1415 I (Bjoreio) and IV (Eidfjord) for the southern part.

    • The tour, as we did it, contains ten "full day tours" and two rather short days. Coordinates have been measured using a Garmin GPS12 and an EPE of about 10m and are provided in UTM format (grid zone 32). The tour from Hedlo back to Finse, passing the Hardangerjökull on the western side is nothing this should be recommended for the winter, since the area towards Eidfjord and around Rembedalssete is really steep.
  • 2001-12-26: flight to Oslo, train Oslo-Finse (~5 hrs).
